95 or 92 gasoline? These disagreements can be called classic for all car enthusiasts. Today we will answer this question briefly and in understandable language.

Which is better - 95 or 92 gasoline?

This question is much simpler than everyone thinks.

I only use 95 gasoline! Why? Because that's what it says in the owner's manual for my car.

I know that many drivers “foaming at the mouth” prove that 95 gasoline does not exist, that it contains additives and the like. So what, what additives are there? Additives are found almost everywhere, including in motor oil, but for some reason this doesn’t scare anyone. Good additives are chemical compositions, which are designed to help the engine. There is absolutely nothing scary about this. I am more than sure that this debate will soon lose its relevance, since, in my opinion, 92nd gasoline will face the fate of 80th gasoline. There is also an opinion that 95 gasoline is often counterfeited. Of course they fake it. But 92nd gasoline is also counterfeited. There are quite a lot of unscrupulous people, so they counterfeit everything - from gasoline to cigarettes. Therefore, refuse gasoline from used O I don’t think it’s entirely reasonable to have a higher octane number because someone is counterfeiting something. You just need to refuel your car at proven gas stations.

It is also worth considering that if the knock sensor reports detonation, then several bursts of this very detonation have already occurred! And only then the ECU changes the parameters! I don’t think there’s any need to explain how dangerous detonation is for an engine. I've seen piston engines killed by constant detonation. This is probably the main enemy of motors.

Yes, this fact takes place. But there’s no getting around this for now. Until they use more modern chemical compounds to increase the octane number, this will have to be tolerated. You always have to pay for everything, and this fact is no exception.

Which gasoline consumes less?

I won’t even consider this issue, since I see absolutely no point in it. If the engine is designed for gasoline with an octane rating of at least 95, then using 92 for the sake of some savings of 50 kopecks is simply absurd.

I would like to consider the other side of the coin. The fact is that very often you can hear from owners of seemingly identical cars completely different impressions of using fuel with different octane numbers. Someone writes that the car does not move at 92, someone hears detonation and other nuances. And someone, on the contrary, hates 95 gasoline - like high consumption, the car stalls, etc.

Why are there such opposite reviews from owners of identical cars? Of course, everything, as usual, can be attributed to the different quality of fuel in different regions and at different gas stations. But let’s leave this for those who blame gasoline for all their problems.

The fact is that despite the identical engines, not all engine control units are configured in the same way.

Let's look at this in more detail.

The first models for the Ukrainian market were equipped with special electronic jumpers under the hood. On the diagrams they received the name, which in translation means - octane switch.

I talked about this jumper in the article. By default it was set to 91 octane from the factory.

But, after some time, this jumper was removed, and by default the ECU began to be set to octane 95. Therefore, even in the operating instructions for the car, Lachevodov has different requirements for the fuel used. Some have no lower than 91, and some have no lower than 95.

These changes are associated with more stringent environmental requirements, which apparently did not allow the use of 91 octane.

From that moment on, the debate over the fuel used intensified, as some rode better on the 92nd, and others on the 95th.

And some are convinced that there is no difference and all these settings do not have any effect, and the knock sensor will help adjust the ECU to any octane number.

What can I say... Everyone has their own opinion and everyone has the right to think the way they want.

But if you don’t think, but look at the real development of events, you will notice that when you switch the jumper to 95, the starting SOP on the diagnostic graphs actually increases. And you can also notice that people have made the knock sensor literally a holy and omnipotent sensor, capable of correcting almost any situation. If you look at the diagnostic graphs, the adjustment of the OZ for cylinders begins only at a speed of 90 km/h...

How to convert Lacetti from 95 to 92

Despite the fact that the octane number switching jumper was eliminated, this option remained in the engine control unit. And using it is not difficult.

Let's consider this procedure on the SIRIUS D4 ECU, but these options are also available on other control units, including the HV-240.

First, let’s determine exactly what kind of gasoline your engine control unit is configured for, if you don’t know. To work, we will need a 10 mm wrench and an ohmmeter (multimeter).

First of all, disconnect the negative terminal from the battery

...and remove the block from the ECU

We need pin 27 of the ECU block. The last contacts are signed and it is not difficult to calculate the required contact. He appears fourth from the right in the bottom row.

We connect the first probe of the multimeter to it. Not all probes reach the contact, so it is convenient to use a piece of wire

We connect the second probe of the multimeter to ground. The most convenient way to do this is by connecting to a disconnected contact from the battery

We set the multimeter to resistance measurement or “continuity” mode and watch the readings. If the resistance is minimal, then the 27th pin of the ECU is connected to ground, and this, in turn, means that the ECU is set to 95 octane.

It's clear? I will repeat.

If the 27th contact of the ECU block is shorted to ground, then the ECU understands this as 95 octane. And if the 27th contact is not shorted to ground, then the ECU understands this as 91 octane.

This can be done in two ways:

  • Remove pin 27 from the ECU block and leave it unconnected.
  • Cut the wire from pin 27. You can leave it cut, or you can make a switch, or a “male-female” switch for quick switching between 91 and 95 octane. Here the choice is yours.

To find the required wire, you need to remove the cap from the ECU connector.

Let's move it forward

We remove the cover and find our fourth wire from the edge from the 27th contact

Attention! I have a car with an octane switching jumper under the hood, so my wire is blue! On cars without this jumper, the wire will be black with a white stripe! This doesn't change the essence!

To switch to 92 gasoline, just cut this wire. And in order to switch to 95 again, you need to connect this wire again.

If you do not want to cut the wire, you can simply remove pin 27 from the ECU block.

The Lacetti engine is capable of digesting 92 gasoline, but it is better to pour 95.

Regular motor gasoline is what 92nd gasoline is called according to the international European classification.

This means that it is used for medium-load naturally aspirated engines with a medium compression ratio. In Europe, both leaded and unleaded grades of 92-octane gasoline are produced. At the same time, 95 gasoline is classified as Premium motor gasoline . How big is the difference between these two brands? It is enough for General Motors to recommend AI-95 for use in accordance with GOST 51105-97 (leaded gasoline).

The numbers that designate gasoline brands are octane number. Therefore, three units of difference plays a significant role. Moreover, until 2009, GM recommended refueling with gasoline of at least 92. Since that time, the engine has been slightly modernized and fuel requirements have changed. New technologies for the production of petroleum products have also emerged.

Thus, AI-95 is indeed produced from low-grade gasoline, but with the addition of modern additives (aromatic components, gas gasoline, products of high-temperature distillate processing). And this is no longer the 95 that was sold to us 10–15 years ago.

What kind of gasoline to fill in a Chevrolet Lacetti

While the car is under warranty service, it is strictly forbidden to pour gasoline with an octane rating of less than 95 into the tank.

And this is not a whim of GM or a universal conspiracy. If during warranty period If there is a breakdown and as a result of the examination it will be established that detonation occurred in the engine due to the wrong brand of gasoline, the case will be considered non-warranty and the owner of the car will have to pay for repairs.
