Residents of rural areas, summer residents, gardeners, in a word, everyone who works on the land, always dream of a mechanized “helper”. They expect him to finally replace the shovel. The best will be a walk-behind tractor. We will tell them step by step how to build such a unit in your yard from scrap materials.

Let's imagine ideas from which you can make a simple walk-behind tractor. Firstly, the main unit is the engine internal combustion(ICE). Most often single-cylinder to reduce gasoline consumption. Secondly, the design must allow plowing, weeding and becoming a vehicle.

You can attach a number of homemade devices to the walk-behind tractor to make work in the garden easier. The most necessary: a moldboard or moldless plow, a drum or tine cultivator, a grass mower with a minimum grip, or a pump for supplying water from any source.

The question immediately arises: what is the gas mileage? A 4-liter tank is installed on the walk-behind tractor. It is enough for half a day of engine operation. But only if it is not a virgin (compacted) area, but is often cultivated, even with a shovel.

Step-by-step construction

Define engine power. Remember: internal combustion engine with air cooled overheat from prolonged work, they also need forced ventilation. Therefore, put aside the internal combustion engine from chainsaws, even from the Ural 2T Electron with 5 horsepower(hp).

The more productive internal combustion engines from Planeta motorcycles are single- and two-cylinder (16-22 hp). Soviet motor scooters of the Vyatka group (prototype of the Italian Vespa), as well as Tula and its prototypes, including the cargo Ant, are also suitable. Their power ranges from 5.5 to 8-11 hp. Such motorcycles and scooters are still in garages and sheds; they can be bought for next to nothing through advertisements.

Let's continue detailed instructions how to make a walk-behind tractor. For those who have a plot of land of 20-50 acres, we will offer to manufacture a walk-behind tractor with the internal combustion engine of a single-cylinder Izh-49 motorcycle or a two-cylinder K-700, or the first editions of Ural.

The technical value of the Izh-49 lies in the steel engine head, not the aluminum one. Despite the power of 11.5 hp, this Izh will give a head start in traction power to its successor - the Izh-Planet P-5 with its twenty “horses”.

In villages today they plow their gardens without any modifications. And they carry up to one and a half to two tons of hay on trailers. They are slow moving, so they don't get hot.

What is needed for assembly:

  • “donor” from which some spare parts are removed;
  • drawings (from the Internet or the passport of the factory walk-behind tractor);
  • a welding unit, preferably a mini-turning unit (there is a school type);
  • set of tools.

Assembly Features

The main thing in this is the drawings and dimensions of walk-behind tractors with your own hands. Draw them even by hand, setting the parameters, indicating the places of welding and bolting.

Install the main gearbox from the Ant on the frame. The frame is from an old motorcycle with the front wheel fork removed. Attach a hitch to the rear of the frame attachments. Attach wheels from classic cars (“Zhiguli”) to the axle pipe.

Main nodes

A lot has been said about the internal combustion engine. At Izhi, working with high speed, a creeper is required. It is mounted on many walk-behind tractors and is sold as a regular spare part.

The factory gearbox is already equipped with a creeper. You can’t assemble it yourself; it’s better to buy it or dismantle it from a non-working or outdated walk-behind tractor. This simple options do-it-yourself walk-behind tractors.

Trolley trailer

Factory units are often equipped with a two-wheeled cart with a driver's seat. It won’t be difficult to assemble attachments for walk-behind tractors with your own hands. One of them is a trailer truck.

What you need to prepare for work:

  • metal pipes;
  • wheels, preferably ten-inch ones from the old one Soviet scooter or motorized strollers;
  • steel sheets with a thickness of 0.2 - 0.3 millimeters;
  • corners, hardware, tools.

It is advisable to weld the frame in one place. This will give it a rectangular shape without vertical bends.

Assembly technology

From the corners you make crossbars that will be installed at the back and front. They are connected by vertical profiles with a rectangular clearance. Get the grate.

Attach the same four racks to the longitudinal ones - fasteners for the sides.

Weld 0.3 mm steel to the grille, make the sides from 0.2 mm.

Weld the side members to the transverse beams. Attach springs from Moskvich and Lada classics to them. Connect the middles of the springs to the wheel beam.

Weld a “drawbar” in the front part for a non-rigid coupling with the walk-behind tractor.

The seat is installed either on an extended drawbar or in the back of a trailer. It is from the front seat of any passenger car, or welded by yourself and equipped with a soft pillow and backrest.

Caterpillars on a walk-behind tractor

Peasants and summer residents work in the fields and gardens almost until the first snow without frost. It is not easy for a walk-behind tractor with a trailer to drive onto such soil or onto asphalt or a grader. For clarity, take a photo of the walk-behind tractor with your own hands.

They will improve the traction force by installing unique tracks from a conveyor belt or old tires. But here some experience or advice from craftsmen is needed.

In such weather it is easier to put car chains on the tires. We drove out of the mud and snow onto the asphalt - remove the chains and go home without incident.

Those who own more land plot, you may have an idea to purchase an agricultural unit that will facilitate the work associated with cultivating the soil. Nowadays, it is possible to choose exactly the mechanism that can easily perform human work. But most units have one drawback that can negatively affect the purchase. This disadvantage is the high cost. However, even in such a situation, you can find a way out. To do this, you don’t need to spend as much money as it would take to update it, but you just need to devote your personal time to making the device yourself.

Advantages of a homemade walk-behind tractor

The most popular and popular agricultural implement is the walk-behind tractor. It is equipment without which it is very difficult for the landowner to manually handle plowing, harvesting and other costly processes. And in winter time year, it is possible to easily clear roads of snow using a shovel that can be mounted on a walk-behind tractor.

An all-terrain vehicle made from a walk-behind tractor can work in hard-to-reach places and also process areas the size of which reaches one square meter. Landowners can always find other jobs that the presented unit can help with.

Among the main advantages of the device are the following:

  • small amount of fuel consumed, which will allow the owner to spend a minimum amount of money;
  • standard tank volume, which is on average 4.8 liters. Just this amount is enough for continuous work for about half a day or even more.

What this device indispensable in agriculture - this is an indisputable fact. Without it, the landowner would have to spend a huge amount of his own time and physical strength to cultivate the soil, dig up, hill up, plant and dig up root crops. You can even make a pneumatic walker from a walk-behind tractor! But the question comes down to high cost such an iron assistant.
A high-quality imported unit is very expensive, and a cheap Chinese version is very unreliable, so it can fail at any time. The optimal solution would be to make a homemade walk-behind tractor with your own hands. Remaking a walk-behind tractor that is outdated is also very rational.

Thanks to this homemade walk-behind tractor, you can do the following work with your own hands:

  • transportation of cargo with a maximum weight of 250-300 kg. To do this, you will need to attach a trailer to the walk-behind tractor, complete with space for transporting heavy loads;
  • plowing and harrowing the soil using tools such as a cultivator, harrow and cutters;
  • planting root crops and harvesting, which a person would spend a lot of time doing manually;
  • sweeping, drilling and snow removal;
  • soil fertilization.

Without a doubt this homemade device is in no way inferior to factory models. It may have a similar or even higher level of quality and reliability.

How to assemble a walk-behind tractor with your own hands

Before you start assembling a homemade walk-behind tractor, you need to decide what the power of the equipment will be. If you then want to make an ATV from a walk-behind tractor, you will need a powerful power unit. The following work will depend on this.

In order to make a device with your own hands from scrap materials, you must have metalworking tools available:

  • grinder with cutting discs;
  • electric drill with a set of suitable drills;
  • welding apparatus, mask, electrodes;
  • set of tools for a locksmith.

Before making a walk-behind tractor with your own hands, it is recommended to find out detailed information about several factory-made models. In order to assemble this device with your own hands, you must have at least a little knowledge regarding the operation of an internal combustion engine. You need to know that a homemade walk-behind tractor may have spare parts from a chainsaw or motorcycle.

Before assembling the equipment, it is necessary to select the main components and parts. The size of the device will depend on the available power unit, wheel size and suspension design. It is advisable to have a diagram at hand that will indicate where the main elements should be located.

You should start assembling homemade walk-behind tractors by assembling the frame, which can be a steel pipe. In addition, it is necessary to add a chain gear to the package and install chassis. A structure is attached to it that allows you to attach a transport cart and other attachments.

The design can even be made with a Chinese engine. To make your work easier, it is recommended to develop homemade walk-behind tractors with your own hands so that they are multifunctional.

Turning a motorcycle into a walk-behind tractor

In order to make a homemade walk-behind tractor from a motorcycle, you must first prepare drawings of the final unit expected. Absolutely all homemade products from a walk-behind tractor are created subject to the least modernization of the used components from the motorcycle. To create such a design, you need to have a reserve of experience and have certain knowledge in this area, then you can even make a snowmobile from a walk-behind tractor.

Such walk-behind tractors are created with a pre-designed transmission, consisting of many stages. One of the main elements of this design is the gearbox, which comes with an adapter. The device is quite difficult to equip with a main gearbox.

In addition, the walk-behind tractor made from ZAZ will be manufactured on the basis of a single-axle chassis and will be a small-sized tractor. Remaking a walk-behind tractor takes a lot of time, but it the best option in case there is a desire to acquire equipment that would be capable of performing all agricultural work. Moreover, they must be performed very quickly, with high quality and relatively cheaply when compared with new equipment.

If you decide to make a homemade walk-behind tractor from a motorcycle engine, the main condition is to make maximum use of used motorcycle components, with minimal modifications to them. This will require certain experience and accumulated knowledge, with a large supply of patience and labor. The result of the work will be a reliable farm machine, adapted to almost any conditions. If a malfunction occurs, the repair will be the replacement of a broken part or a failed unit.

For example, if you take a sub-motor frame or a power unit: they are manufactured in production. If you look at the adapter gearbox, it is taken from the main gear of a motorized stroller.

Making a homemade walk-behind tractor from a motorcycle engine

For successful operation of the walk-behind tractor, a multi-stage kinematic transmission scheme was developed, which increases the additional ratio, as well as traction and torque. Together with the reducer adapter in kinematic diagram a main gearbox is provided. When combining the gearbox with the wheelset and final drive, the result is a highly efficient propulsion device.

A special mechanism tensions the drive chains. It is attached with pins to the sliders, which are made of steel angle. The latter are also capable of moving by tightening or loosening the drive chain. For this purpose, grooves are provided in the sliders and there are two adjusting screws and M10 mounting bolts.

The most labor-intensive design is the main gearbox. It is made from pre-prepared steel plates (10 mm). Reinforcement disks are placed where the bearings are installed. The welds are continuous to prevent oil leakage. A bracket-bracket is welded to the rear wall of the gearbox, allowing you to attach a cargo trolley or trailed agricultural implement. If you use a cargo trolley, the walk-behind tractor becomes a mini tractor.

A steel plate (5 mm) is used to make the gearbox cover. It is attached to the body with M6 screws. Spur gears and shafts are taken from agricultural machinery. It must be remembered that the purpose intermediate shaft is the power take-off, so it is better to make new shafts than to use old ones. The differential of the main gearbox on the walk-behind tractor was part of a decommissioned electric car.

Locking the wheels of a walk-behind tractor with a motorcycle engine

Wheel locking - necessary technical solution for a walk-behind tractor, from a design point of view. On the right axle shaft, where the spline end is, a cylindrical neck is machined, which should be slightly deeper than the spline groove. A threaded hole is made at the opposite end of the axle shaft.

When the M12 adjusting screw rotates, the axle shaft is displaced due to the action of the coil spring. Further inside the differential, the axle shaft moves away from engagement with the “native” gear and engages with the adjacent one, thereby blocking the wheels.

The impellers of the walk-behind tractor are made from the wheels of a decommissioned electric car. For each disk, 16 grooves are cut in the rim, and steel plates are welded in, which will serve as the basis for the lugs. After that, jumpers are welded to them, and the rims of plow wheels are obtained.

Plow for walk-behind tractor

The unit that regulates the entry of the plow into the soil is very effectively made. It consists of a welded U-shaped body, with installation and limiting protrusions. The heel of the plow's gradle is inserted into them, which is capable of rotating in a vertical plane using a bushing-axial hinge. The required angle of rotation is set by an M16 pin. The beam channel is welded to the rotary heel. Thanks to a slight turn to the side where the soil falls off from the plow, it becomes possible correct installation the last one.

The cutting knife is also attached to the beam. In order to install it at the desired angle to the soil and to the required value, a standard clamp with a cover plate and two M12 bolts with nuts are used. In front of the walk-behind tractor, an auxiliary wheel is placed on a V-shaped bracket. Its purpose is to ensure ease during transportation, or when moving the walk-behind tractor backwards.

The walk-behind tractor is controlled by two rods from the walk-behind mower with handles. The reverse and speed switch knobs are also used for this.

The productivity of the walk-behind tractor is three to five hundred square meters of land per hour. Ordinary soil can be plowed in second gear. For heavy soils, work on the first one.

How to make a walk-behind tractor with your own hands from the engine of the planet

The design of this walk-behind tractor is perfect for Voskhod, Minsk, and Ant engines. The engine from IZH Planet -3 has proven itself best. To make a walk-behind tractor with your own hands from the engine of the planet, you need to make small design changes.

The engine is forced to cool, connected via the ignition to a coil. Engine power 18 hp Thanks to the installed gearbox, there is a reverse gear.

Transport speed - up to 70 km/h. Minimum speed - 5-6 km/h. The cart is made from two old tarsion-type strollers and can withstand weights of up to 500 kg.

The frame is welded to the channel. When modeling a walk-behind tractor, it is necessary to take into account the engine mount, so we shift the longitudinal axis of the gearbox by 10 mm relative to the engine axis. The engine can be mounted in different ways. To increase engine power, an additional shaft is cut into the channel.

After that we place fuel tank. Upon completion of assembly, we give the walk-behind tractor a beautiful appearance, painted.

This walk-behind tractor is capable of driving 50-70 km per day. On asphalt you can maintain a speed of 50-60 km/h. You can use it as vehicle, and like a walk-behind tractor.

DIY walk-behind tractor from a motorcycle video collection

It is no secret that in our country there are many craftsmen who are capable of creating all kinds of technological wonders from scrap materials. Of considerable interest are the capabilities of the engine from a walk-behind tractor, which can be equipped with a motorcycle, swamp vehicle, snowmobile and all sorts of other devices. Why are such solutions attractive?

First of all, its accessibility, not to mention the ability of talented mechanics, while doing an interesting job, to find practical and original application their efforts, creating things needed in the household. As for homemade motorcycle with an engine from a walk-behind tractor, this solution can be called not only practical, but also quite simple to implement.

You can make a motorcycle from a walk-behind tractor yourself

How to make a motorcycle with a walk-behind tractor engine with your own hands

The most logical and natural solution to install an engine from a walk-behind tractor on a motorcycle, as a rule, comes to owners of broken down scooters or bicycles who have power plant from a walk-behind tractor or cultivator (for example, if it was equipped with a different motor, but the old one remained). On the Internet you can find examples of a Ural motorcycle with an engine from a walk-behind tractor that successfully fulfills its function “ iron horse" The only drawback of such a vehicle is the ban on its use for travel on public roads.

But covering long distances in the immediate area, driving to a field, to a river or to a store are tasks that it copes with perfectly. homemade moped with an engine from a walk-behind tractor. A standard engine from a walk-behind tractor with a power of 5-6 hp. quite enough to accelerate to 60 kilometers per hour. But if an adult rides such a motorcycle, the new vehicle should be equipped with reinforced wheels that can handle a weight load of up to 100 kilograms.

In this video you will learn how to make a bike from a walk-behind tractor:

For assembly, you will need the same tools that are needed in the manufacture of most other homemade products for a walk-behind tractor and are usually available in any farm that owns small agricultural machinery. The list of tools is as follows:

  • welding machine;
  • grinder with metal discs;
  • drill with metal drills;
  • set of wrenches;
  • screwdriver;
  • pliers;
  • level;
  • hammer;
  • anti-corrosion agent, metal paint and a brush (or other device for applying it).

The first step is to weld the frame. To make it you will need a steel pipe, a corner, a bracket-bracket, and a steel strip. Before starting manufacturing, you should make a drawing, make calculations and mark all the connection points of the frame parts and the connections of other parts of the moped. After this, prepare the materials from which the frame will be made and transfer the markings to them.

Next, you should weld the mounting bracket, treat it with an anti-corrosion compound and make holes for the bolts. Fix the engine onto the bracket, check the accuracy of fixation, and adjust the position. Connect the engine to the chassis using a chain or belt. Install the steering column and wheels. Install the shift cables and their controls. In addition, it would not be a bad idea to add cushioning under the seat.

After assembly is completed, the vehicle, like any motor device, needs to be run in. To do this, you need to operate the motorcycle at low speeds for 6-8 hours before giving it a full load.

When independently constructing a walk-behind tractor, the old Minsk motorcycle, which had been in the garage for a long time and had not found practical use, was taken as a basis. And continuing the theme “”, we’ll talk about how to make a walk-behind tractor from a Minsk motorcycle.

The main task was to make agricultural machinery with your own hands, at home, without purchasing expensive parts and elements and without the need to use lathes and other machines. Well, and most importantly, the walk-behind tractor should be convenient for agricultural work and become an assistant in working in the fields - plowing, hilling, harvesting and transporting crops.

The walk-behind tractor turned out to be just like that - multifunctional, convenient, which was repeatedly confirmed by field tests. Quite heavy and difficult conditions The technician accepted the work well and behaved with dignity.

How it all started - a walk-behind tractor from Minsk

The work began with the modification of the motorcycle frame and its adaptation to our requirements. Unnecessary running boards and other parts were removed. Only part of the driver's footrest on the right side remained; it later served as a support for exhaust pipe walk-behind tractor. The seat clamp was also removed, but only after the steering arms were welded to the frame from a 1.25 section pipe, manufactured as one element (curved) together with a spacer, arms of a shape suitable for controlling the equipment.

Particularly careful attention was paid to the manufacture of the bushing intended for the drive shaft of the wheels and its installation on the frame of the future walk-behind tractor. If there had been such a possibility, it would have been much better to manufacture it on a lathe from round bars or thick-walled pipes, but there was no equipment of this type, so the bushing was made from pipe sections without a seam suitable sizes by welding. Also, by the way, a bushing was made for the intermediate shaft.

Parts of a large diameter pipe served as housings for ball bearings. The bearings were used type 80205. It would be possible to take type 60205 with a washer from various contaminants (if you use such bearings, the washer must certainly be turned outward.)

Under the lower tube of the motorcycle frame there was a place for attaching the wheel hub - an arcuate opening. To be correct, this bushing must be attached with great precision perpendicular to the diametrical plane of the existing frame. Which was done with all diligence.

All the components of the resulting walk-behind tractor can be seen in the drawing below.

Walk-behind tractor from an old motorcycle (units and components pos. 6,8,9,10,13 from the Minsk motorcycle):

The fairly simple design of the equipment makes it reliable and convenient.
